No Man's Land...

The planes overhead sway out of control
While I lay here, yelling and wounded
No help coming, is no one alive?
All the hopes, all that strife.

A mine blast, somewhere close by
Another one down, goodbye comrade
Close my eyes as someone approaches
The enemy, he must be, won't budge.

The smell of gun powder, the last cries of many
I hear them ringing in my head constantly
Will take my time to see what we did to this place
As home is farfetched a thought now, rest in peace.

This used be a place, beautiful and plush green
Now only covered with corpses, guns and shells
The sky's all brown, a shade of red too
That's what we have made of it, an act too cruel.

No going back now, though the past comes to mind
The happy little life too, that I left behind
A week before it was that I was with them
All left to die now, didn't even say goodbye.

I heard the trucks, and the cheering soldiers too
Singing the victory song, all too familiar
We hadn't lost after all, the battle's won
The cork shall fly, the champagne shall flow.

Haunted by the thought that I'm left behind
All forgotten, they must think I'm dead
A flare I'd fired, waiting for them to return
It's been two days now, can't move and I'm on my own.

Pray for them people, pray for their souls,
The dead didn't see it coming, the silence shows
The many that died, the many I killed
Am better of dead too, at a point of no return.
